Branding When Times are Tough (Recon Thursday/Price)

Hello, I’m Jim Glover, That Branding Guy, for Once a Day Marketing™.  Today is Recon Thursday. I recently read a Forbes article that made me think about brand ambassadors, your top customers, and whether or not these individuals will be loyal in the future.

The article talked about how women tend to be very brand loyal but because of the difficult economic times they may now be seeking out a lower price over being loyal to a brand.  This in turn caused me to consider how to ensure customers understand your brand so that you don't have to compete on price alone.

During these economic times it's very important to ensure your target customers clearly understand the benefits of your product.  You must consistently communicate your messaging when times are tough.  Ensure you continue to advertise, perhaps more than ever, because when it comes time for your customers to think about buying a product you want to be top-of-mine, you want to own that mindshare so they consider you at time of purchase.

You will have to think about price but you don't want to be only marketing on price because that's a losing proposition.

We need to take this Forbes article to heart and understand that brand ambassadors may not be as brand loyal as they once were and are seeking out price incentives and that it's essential to differentiate your product.  I believe that you can accomplish this through your branding and marketing efforts.  I also think your customers will continue to be loyal if they have a clear understanding of what your product is all about.  Consistent messaging over time and delivering on your promise is key to maintaining that brand loyalty.

Enhance Your Customer Listening Skills (Action Wednesday/Process)

Hello, I’m Jim Glover, That Branding Guy, for Once a Day Marketing.  Today is Action Wednesday and I'm going to share a tip I use to greatly improve listening to my clients.

It’s essential to learn all I can from my clients and potential clients about their needs.  This enables me to assess how my product or service may benefit them.  The best way to gain this understanding is to engage them in a conversation.  When clients trust you they will share valuable information you can use to enhance their experience with your company, product and brand.

My simple trick to really listen is to record the conversation with a small digital tape recorder.  Today smart phones and iPads can do the same thing.  When you record the discussion you can sit back, relax and engage your customer and listen to what they are telling you.  You don't have to worry about taking notes or trying to remember everything.  Another advantage of this technique is that during later reviews you will discover key points that you may have overlooked or critical elements that could have fallen through the cracks.

Perfecting Your Internal Marketing Process (Strategic Tuesday/Process)

Hello, I’m Jim Glover, That Branding Guy, for Once a Day Marketing.  Today is Strategic Tuesday and we want you to think about constantly improving your internal marketing process.

Start with your vision and mission statements.  Does everyone in your organization have a clear understanding of this strategic direction?

How about your goals and objectives? Are you using the S.M.A.R.T. goals to indentifying achievable and relevant goals?  There are numerous Once a Day Marketing blogs on these subjects for you to reference.

Next, think about your long-term strategic plan at the 10,000 foot level and align with where you want to take your company.  You should follow this up with a tactical marketing action plan that identifies tasks, responsibilities timelines and budgets.

Along the way ask yourself what you can do today to make your business better.  Also, look at your critical, near-term milestones and adjust your marketing process to ensure these milestones are being achieved.  If not, ask why and hold responsible parties accountable.

Perfecting your internal marketing process is an ongoing activity.  The more you monitor and revise, the better your chances are of achieving your vision, mission, goals and objectives.

Brand Building Using the 7Ps of Marketing (Smart Monday/Product)

Hello, I’m Jim Glover, That Branding Guy, for Once a Day Marketing.  Today is Smart Monday and we are going to dive deeper into the 7Ps of Marketing starting with Product.

A product can be a lot of things and is defined as anything you offer to your customers.  It can be a physical or tangible product, service, a place such as a destination or even an idea like the mission of a non-profit.

Offering a product that provides a clear benefit to your customer is the foundation of a strong brand.  By understanding the nature of your product and its positioning in the market place you can target your audience with a message that will be relevant, resonate and drive the desired call to action: buy your product or service, visit your destination or contribute to your worthy cause.

Building Social Media Content (Digital Friday/Physical Evidence)

Hello, I’m Jim Glover, That Branding Guy, for Once a Day Marketing.  Today is Digital Friday and we are discussing social media content for your business.

The concept that “Content is King” is more true now than ever.  We are looking at content management and what that means to your business.

The three major components of content management are creating, managing and publishing.  Creating is producing digital content; managing is a system to save and retrieve and publishing means making material available to your customers via social media.

Content management is importance and exciting because you can now share videos, photos, music and text that is immediately accessible by your audience from anywhere, anytime using PCs, smartphones and iPads.  Content is inexpensive to produce and once you create the content it resides in cyber space, delivering your marketing message, for perpetuity.

Creating a Customer Focused Process (Recon Thursday/Process)

Hello, I’m Jim Glover, That Branding Guy, for Once a Day Marketing™.  Today is Recon Thursday and we are discussing the importance of providing a superior customer experience.

In our last blog we reviewed the impression physical evidence can make on your customers.  Now I am going to extend that discussion to include the entire customer experience.

If you have not done so lately, review the various channels through which customers seek information about your company or buy your product.  Walk through the physical process / experience the customer has when interacting with your company.  Determine if there is room for enhancement.

Polish your customer communication.  Whether it is direct, indirect, social media or inbound marketing, ensure it is creating a desire for customer to do business with you.

A consistent, repeatable customer experience (process) is a key element to the success of marketing and branding efforts.

Creating a Good First Impression for Customers (Action Wednesday/Physical Evidence)

Hello, I’m Jim Glover, That Branding Guy, for Once a Day Marketing.  Today is Action Wednesday and we are looking at Physical Evidence – one of the 7Ps of Marketing.

The Physical Evidence of your business is the first thing customers encounter and interact with.  Look around your store, offices and even your website.  Consider the kind of impression their appearance is creating in the minds of your customers and the impact on your Brand.

Your task for Action Wednesday is to determine improvements you can implement.  Focus on those items that your customer sees first.  Items such as signage and cleanliness will go a long way in making a good (or bad) first impression on your customer.

Product Strategy: Meeting Customer Needs (Strategic Tuesday/Product)

Hello, I’m Jim Glover, That Branding Guy, for Once a Day Marketing™.  Today is Strategic Tuesday and I am providing an overview of developing product strategy to meeting customer needs.

There are many product strategies available and we are going to start by looking at the Ansoff Product/Market Matrix.  This classic paradigm has been used by marketers for a long time.

The first concept is market penetration, used for an existing product in an existing market.  This may enable you to grab a little more market share from your competition.  Another intersection of the matrix is market development, used with an existing product to tap into new markets.  Next is product development.  This means you have an existing market but you are trying to push more product into that market.  The last intersection of the Ansoff Product/Market Matrix is diversification, where you create new products for new markets.

Are Your Marketing Results Measuring Up? (Smart Monday/Process)

Hello, I’m Marianne Tenenbaum, contributing blogger to Once a Day Marketing™.  Today is Smart Monday where we strive to enhance your branding and marketing knowledge.

A popular maxim in process improvement says you can’t improve what you don’t measure.  This applies to marketing efforts as well.  How are you determining the success of your marketing campaigns?  Do you judge results by how you feel?  Are you looking at sales improvement or something else?

If you aren’t measuring results with meaningful data you may not have sufficient insight into how campaigns and channels are performing compared to expectations.  As you are developing your next advertising campaign, establish goals for a few simple statistics such as response rate, increase in traffic, number of items sold or gross sales that make sense for your business/product.

When the campaign launches, ensure there is a process in place to gather results.  Begin reviewing the performance of the advertising at the close of the campaign and compare that data to the goals you established.

As you continue to measure, you will accumulate fact based information that will enable you to direct your marketing to leverage the strategies that are driving the best results.

Learn more about establishing your goals.  Watch our Once a Day Marketing video: SMART Goals

The Impact of Facebook Graph Search to Your Business (Digital Friday/Promotion)

Hello, I’m Marianne Tenenbaum, contributing blogger for Once a Day Marketing.  Today is Digital Friday and, inspired by two recent Wall Street Journal articles, I am going to summarize the recent news of Facebook’s newly unveiled Graph Search.

On January 15, 2013 Facebook launched a new search, referred to as the Graph Search.  This feature allows users to seek information based on connections to their friends; for example search for a favorite movie.  The search may also be used to obtain a more specific recommendation such as the best spot for Chinese food in San Francisco.  With 800 million active users and supplemental sources from BING, I am sure search possibilities are endless.

What does this mean to your business?  Any potential opportunities will not be available immediately.  Facebook is currently testing the tool with a limited number of users and it’s not available on mobile devices.

Although initial response online and on Wall Street was lukewarm at best; Facebook has opened up a myriad of possibilities for the future.  Your business may have more choices available to reach customers, ways to build deeper emotional connections to your audience, re-energized campaigns to Like a business and an additional search engine to channel your marketing message through.

Create a Marketing Recipe for Success

Hello, I’m Jim Glover, That Branding Guy, for Once a Day Marketing™.  Today is Recon Thursday where I share my thoughts on branding and marketing.

The other day a friend posted an inspiring illustration on Facebook.  The image showed a man walking through a field pulling an asphalt road behind him.  With every step he was leaving a defined path for others to follow.  The caption read: "Sometimes the best road is the one we make".

This illustration reminded me of all the promotional channels available to market our products or services.  I refer to these options as the marketing ecosystem.  There are countless combinations -- print, video/audio, PR, online, direct, out of home, place-based, mobile, and experiential -- that you can use to develop your marketing.  If you are creative and strategic, you will map out a plan or "recipe" that is unique to your brand.  If successful, your competitors will follow.

Crossing Into the Digital Divide (Action Wednesday/Process)

Hello, I’m Jim Glover, That Branding Guy, for Once a Day Marketing™.  Today is Action Wednesday and I want you to start thinking about using more digital tools and channels for marketing and branding this year.

To demonstrate the powerful customer experience you can create related to digital technologies, I would like to share an example.  Listening to ESPN Sports Radio in my car, I was intrigued with a story.  When I arrived home I dashed to my computer and was able to find that same broadcast streaming online so I could listen to the end of the discussion.  This caused me to consider how important it is to be committed to digital technologies and tools to embrace our customers and share our brand.

With all the digital tools and channels available there is absolutely no reason not to be fully engaged in the digital world.  Which tools are you using?  Look first at a website.  Are you sharing the right information with your customers?  Are you considering online retail?  Are you able to sell products via the Internet?

Are you leveraging the social media channels such as Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube and Twitter?  They are absolute musts for sharing information about your brand.  Also consider applications such as Constant Contact to share e-newsletters with your customers who choose to opt-in to your content.

Next is Skype; it provides the ability to have a face-to-face conversation through your laptop computer or mobile device using the internet.  Another tool is instant messaging; you can allow customers to instant message to ask questions and enhance the experience with your brand or product.

Videos, podcasts and blogs are additional digital tools that share your marketing message inexpensively through the Internet.

Lastly, webinars are another means to engage audiences all over the world and share with them your branding message.  That's the power of the digital divide and what you should consider making more of a commitment to this year.

Your task for Action Wednesday is to look at what you're doing in the digital environment.  Enhance your existing digital tools and channels and seek out new ones.  Continue to embrace these technologies because I know your competition surely is.  That way you can promote your brand, develop relationships and have a better 2013.

Make Video Part of Your Marketing Strategy (Strategic Tuesday/Physical Evidence)

Hello, I’m Jim Glover, That Branding Guy, for Once a Day Marketing™.  Today is Strategic Tuesday where we share strategy to differentiate your product in the minds of your customers.

I have been producing and directing film, video and interactive video my entire career.  To me, nothing is more powerful than a compelling video that shares the story of your product or service.  Today the costs to produce quality videos are extremely low while the distribution channels to share content with your prospects have never been easier to access or less expensive.

For Strategic Tuesday I strongly encourage you to produce and distribute video content about your company and your brand.  Through SEO, potential customers will discover your media and learn about the benefits your product or services have to offer.  This goes a long way in influencing buyer behavior.

How Top of Mind Drives Sales (Smart Monday/Positioning)

Hello, I’m Jim Glover, That Branding Guy, for Once a Day Marketing™.  Today is Smart Monday where we strive to enhance your branding and marketing knowledge.

When customers decide to make a purchase, they tend to buy the product that commands the top place in their minds at that time.  It’s more than mindshare.  It's the fact that the product benefit is clearly understood and commands the #1 recall position.  Being #2 might sound impressive but it won't generate the sale.

As you move forward with your branding efforts it's imperative that you become #1 in the minds of your target customers in some dimension of the purchase.  Work hard to establish this unique positioning and don't try to be all things to all people.

Enhance Your Brand with Product Innovation (Recon Thursday/Product)

Hello, I’m Jim Glover, That Branding Guy, for Once a Day Marketing™.  Today is Recon Thursday where I often share insight from the real world of branding.

The Consumer Electronics Show (CES), the largest trade show in the country, is underway right now in Las Vegas, NV.  Here attendees come to find out about the latest technologies in smart phones, computers, televisions, etc.  Lately, major automobile manufacturers are exhibiting as well.

The reason is that car designers are incorporating all kinds of new technologies to enhance the driving experience for auto owners.  Utilizing Apple's Siri Concierge System, Google Maps API and other voice command technology, exciting new in-car products are on the rise and CES is the perfect place to showcase these innovations.  Ford is even soliciting software programmers to create new products exclusively for the automobile industry.  Sounds a lot like Apple's App Store, doesn't it?

The main point is that new product innovation does so much to benefit your brand and your business.  The time is right to start thinking about your new products.

You Don't Have to Go It Alone (Action Wednesday/Process)

Hello, I’m Jim Glover, That Branding Guy, for Once a Day Marketing.  Today is Action Wednesday where we inspire you to implement new marketing tactics.

I'm a big fan of the rock band U2.  One of their songs is titled "Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own".  There is a particular lyric in the song that really resonates with me with respect to marketing:  "You don't have to go it alone".

When it comes to marketing, business owners frequently try to do everything themselves; they do their own branding, create taglines, design marketing collateral, develop marketing action plans and implement every tactic.  The reality is that they ARE going it alone.

For Action Wednesday I encourage you to find partners and team members to support your marketing efforts.  They may be internal to your company or they may be external partners like consultants, cooperative advertisers, or even your vendors.  Evaluate where you need support and seek it out so you don't have to go it alone.

Seeking New Markets (Strategic Tuesday/Positioning)

Hello, I’m Jim Glover, That Branding Guy, for Once a Day Marketing™.  Today is Strategic Tuesday and with the arrival of the new year I thought it would be a good idea to start thinking about strategy to develop new markets for your business.

What prompted me to address this topic today is a Wall Street Journal article I recently read regarding how Ethan Allen, a high-end US furniture manufacturer, is taking on the Chinese market by introducing their products into China.

China has a growing middle class that is affluent and is seeking goods that aren’t made in China.  Ethan Allen is developing strategy to fit that demand.

Targeting a new market the way Ethan Allen is means you don’t have to change your product; you just have to find those new markets.  Think about markets you haven’t tapped into.  You might consider options that are around the corner or across the country.

Begin by creating awareness for your product; customers in new market probably don’t know about it.  You may have to reposition the product just a little bit so it resonates with potential customers in the new market and they think it is something that really relates to them as opposed to your other audience.

You don’t have to go all the way to China to introduce your existing product to new markets.  For me as That Branding Guy I have opportunities to share my consultancy with communities, small businesses & entrepreneurs and organizations.  You just have to identify the right type of new market for your existing product.

One of the most important approaches you can use to enhance your brand in the mind of your customers is the 7Ps of Marketing.  These seven components include product, price, place (aka distribution), promotion, people, physical evidence, and process.  I like to include positioning as well; think of it as a bonus P.

Leverage PR to Enhance Your Brand (Action Wednesday/Promotion)

Hello, I’m Jim Glover, That Branding Guy, for Once a Day Marketing.  Today is Action Wednesday.

I'm sending out a press release today on behalf of a client to generate publicity for outstanding work the company has recently completed.  I imagine that you've accomplished some great work this past year as well.

For Action Wednesday develop a press release and distribute it to the media.

Publicity creates a slightly different promotion for your business than a paid advertisement or other tactics in the traditional mode.  When people see a news related story, it lends credibility to your company and your brand.  I believe customers will have more confidence in your product than they would when only seeing an advertisement you paid for.  There is a subtlety with respect this kind of publicity and the press release is what drives it.
