Using the LinkedIn Relationship Feature (Digital Friday/People)

Hello, I'm Jim Glover that branding guy with Once a Day Marketing™.  Today is Digital Friday and we are looking at the "relationship" feature in the LinkedIn profile.

As part of our 7Cs of Successful Inbound Marketing© we address the need to Capture and Cultivate your social media contacts and leads.  With this relationship feature, LinkedIn has made it extremely easy for you to track and engage potential prospects.

For each connection you make with LinkedIn you can enter how you met and who introduced you; make notes about conversations and action items; include tags to help you sort through your database; and add automatic reminders to approach the individual again.

This LinkedIn relationship feature is a very powerful tool to help you manage your inbound marketing efforts.  Although not as powerful as a dedicated lead tracking tool like SalesForce.com, it still provides the bells and whistles you need to build your online relationships and close deals.  Our recommendation: start using the LinkedIn relationship feature today.

Creating a Great Marketing Team (Action Wednesday/People)

Once a Day Marketing™ featured video blog: 5 Characteristics of a Great Marketing Team

Hello, I’m Jim Glover, That Branding Guy, for Once a Day Marketing™.  Today is Action Wednesday and we are discussing how to build a great marketing team.

In his book The Five Dysfunctions of a Team, Patrick Lencioni describes the factors that hinder outstanding team performance.  We thought it would be fun to flip that around and discuss the five characteristics that make a great marketing team.

Let’s take a look at each one of the elements in Lencioni’s model.  The first is trust.  An environment that promotes trust is one in which team members will be able to take risks, ask for help and be given the benefit of the doubt.  Second is conflict.  Teams need some amount of conflict to generate engaging conversation when brain storming new ideas and discussing critical topics.

Next is commitment.  All team members should be on the same page, align with the goals and move forward without hesitation.  Fourth is accountability.  This factor is a very important to success. Ensure team members are accountable for their tasks.  Apply pressure on them to follow through to completion if necessary.

Lastly is attention to results.  All team members should be goal driven and able to deliver on their assigned tasks.

Trust, conflict, commitment, accountability and attention to results; these are the five factors of a great team.  Focus on pulling together individuals with these skills.  Start by selecting one characteristic that you think is the most important to begin working on to improve your team.  If you spend time working hard to build your team, you are going to have great marketing results in the coming years.

Creating Good Brand Ambassadors (Action Wednesday/People)

Once a Day Marketing™ featured video blog: All Staff Are Brand Ambassadors

Hello, I’m Jim Glover, That Branding Guy, for Once a Day Marketing™.  Today is Action Wednesday and we are talking about creating good brand ambassadors for your company.

Every employee of your company is a Brand Ambassador.  It is a common misconception that only the external sales force or people working directly with customers are the people impacting the brand.  The reality is that everyone in your company is a reflection of your brand.

Your action item today is to ensure all team members in your organization understand they are part of the brand.  Creating favorable brand impressions is not only about what staff say and do, but how they say and do things as well.  All the actions of your team influence the brand and they are brand ambassadors at all times, even when not directly working at your company.

Informal and formal brand ambassador training with your staff will enhance the people to people experience throughout your organization and with your customers, thereby elevating the overall stature of your brand in the marketplace.

Cultivating Your Business Relationships (Action Wednesday/People)

Once a Day Marketing™ featured video blog: Cultivate Business Relationships

Hello, I’m Jim Glover, That Branding Guy, for Once a Day Marketing™.  Today’s discussion about cultivating and nurturing business relationships was inspired while working in my garden.

In Santa Fe it’s a bit of a challenge to grow the perfect garden.  There is not much water and the soil is poor.  To make the plants thrive, you have to feed the soil and the soil will feed the plants.

A similar concept applies to developing and nurturing business relationships.  If you create a strong foundation and add the right ingredients, you will grow strong ties.  And that is what building relationships is all about.

Your assignment for Action Wednesday is to begin working in your relationship garden.  First determine the new relationships you would like to establish.  Leverage networking and business contacts, LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook for opportunities to identify potential new relationships.

Next design your own plan to create a solid foundation for relationship building.  Then seek out each relationship and nurture it.  Ensure it has the opportunity to grow strong by providing enough time, attention and follow through.

If you spend time cultivating and nurturing relationships you will accrue benefits for your business.  Relationships may grow quickly or slowly, but eventually they will generate new revenue, partnership and other great opportunities for your business.

Boomers and Seniors Are Big Business (Recon Thursday/People)

Once a Day Marketing™ featured video blog: Targeting the Boomer and Senior Market

Hello, I’m Jim Glover, That Branding Guy, for Once a Day Marketing™.  Today is Recon Thursday and we want to ensure you understand the huge market potential of boomers and seniors.

Information for today’s blog comes from an issue of Entrepreneur Magazine.  In an infographic about Boomers and Seniors, Entrepreneur shares the size of the market, income and spending statistics of this group.

The combined market for Boomers and Seniors in the United States is 117 million people.  Collectively they spend $2 trillion dollars annually and account for more than half of the sales in most categories across all purchases.  One out of four consumers is a Boomer and 40% of those Boomers have an average annual household income of $140,000.  The same Boomers, 46% of them, have a net worth of approximately $2 million.

Those are pretty amazing statistics.  If you haven’t been targeting Boomers and Seniors evaluate whether or not incorporating that segment into your marketing plan is a good fit for your company.  They have the desire to spend money and, even more importantly, they have the money to spend.

Good for Your Brand – Supporting Non-Profits (Action Wednesday/People)

Once a Day Marketing™ featured video blog: Enhancing Brand Image by Supporting Non-Profits

Hello, I’m Jim Glover, That Branding Guy, for Once a Day Marketing. Today is Action Wednesday and I know you’ve heard the expression “win-win”.  Today we are discussing how you can help a good cause and enhance your brand at the same time.

For Action Wednesday I’m recommending that you get involved with a local charity.  We’ve previously discussed that a brand encompasses simply everything.  Your association with a non-profit will create a favorable impression in the minds of your customers.

Chose a non-profit that aligns nicely with your business if possible, more importantly, make sure it aligns with your own personal interests.  Over time, this effort will be seen very favorably by your customers.  They are going to notice your company is supporting a great organization and may seek out your products and services more often in the future because of it.

Earning Professional Referrals (Recon Thursday/People)

Hello, I’m Jim Glover, That Branding Guy, for Once a Day Marketing™.  Today is Recon Thursday and we are looking at how to build professional referrals.

Branding and marketing is a great way to increase mindshare with potential customers and to have them consider your product or service the next time they are in the buying mood.

Providing a great product and exceeding customer expectations are others way to keep the phone ringing because satisfied customers encourage their family, friends and peers to purchase your product.

There is yet another proven method to increase deal flow and that is having highly regarded industry professionals refer business to you.  Nurture your professional relationships to ensure these individuals clearly understand your unique selling proposition (USP) and your ability to deliver on your brand promise.

Through this consistent effort you will earn their trust and they will recommend your business to potential customers in the future.  Nothing beats a solid endorsement.

Cultivating Your Business Relationships (Action Wednesday/People

Hello, I’m Jim Glover, That Branding Guy, for Once a Day Marketing™.  Today is Action Wednesday and we are going to discuss cultivating your business relationships.

Networking is one of the most powerful ways to identify potential business partners and customers.  Whether utilizing social media tools such as LinkedIn or attending local chamber of commerce events, you will make new contacts to add to your network.

Are you cultivating these connections once they are made?  When was the last time you emailed one of your peers to say hello, or had a conversation on the phone or via Skype?  Have you taken the time to personally meet to share a cup of coffee or lunch?

By reaching out to your contacts, at a minimum you will enhance the relationship and there is a strong possibility there may be an opportunity to benefit your  business.  Your task for Action Wednesday is to take time to reach out to some of your connections.

Exploring Social Media - Building a Global Following (Digital Friday/People)

Hello, I’m Jim Glover, That Branding Guy, for Once a Day Marketing™.  Today is Digital Friday and we are looking at the power of social media to build a global following.

The great thing about social media is that it has no physical or geographical border.  Unlike traditional marketing campaigns which have limits to their reach―such as readers of a local newspaper or listeners to a radio broadcast―social media is available to anyone in the world with access to the Internet.  For example, Once a Day Marketing™ has followers on every continent except Antarctica.

As you develop your social media campaign remember your audience is world-wide.  Even if your product or service isn't intended for international customers, many cultures will be tuning in.  Keep this in mind as you develop and release your content.

How Well Does Your Team Represent Your Brand? (Recon Thursday/People)

Hello, I’m Jim Glover, That Branding Guy, for Once a Day Marketing™.  Today is Recon Thursday and we are looking at your team and how well it represents your brand.

We've already discussed that people are a major component of the 7Ps of Marketing.  How you and your staff interact with your customers greatly influences your brand.  It's important to remember that every member of your team is a brand ambassador.

Every touch point with a customer is a fantastic opportunity to create a favorable impression in the mind of your customer.  Take the time to remind your team of this simple point and be sure to provide ongoing brand ambassador and customer service training.

Whenever and wherever a customer can see you means you are on show.  All your actions reflect your brand.

Is the Customer Always Right? (Action Wednesday/People)

Hello, I’m Jim Glover, That Branding Guy, for Once a Day Marketing™.  Today is Action Wednesday and we are going to discuss customer relations.

Every interaction a customer has with your company is an opportunity to create a favorable or unfavorable impression about your brand.  It is critical to consistently provide a good customer experience.

I’m sure you’ve witnessed, perhaps even been involved in, a confrontation between a business and a customer.  By allowing a situation to escalate, the company’s brand is diminished in the mind of that customer and anyone within earshot.

Your action item for today is to implement the customer is always right strategy.  I’ve talked about this in the past and would like to know what works for your business.

Exploring Social Media - LinkedIn Endorsements (Digital Friday/People)

Hello, I’m Jim Glover, That Branding Guy, for Once a Day Marketing™.  Today is Digital Friday and we are continuing our series on social meeting and specifically addressing LinkedIn's endorsements.

When you look at a connection on LinkedIn you have the ability to easily click on skill areas and expertise to endorse that person.  This is an easier way for someone to share their vote of confidence without filling out the more in-depth LinkedIn recommendation.

I've followed numerous blog conversations on the endorsement feature and some LinkedIn members like it and others don't.  Many receive legitimate endorsements from contacts who know them well.  Others are getting endorsements from people they don't know and/or who wouldn't have any knowledge about their skills or expertise.

LinkedIn provides a way for you to turn this feature off if you don't wish to receive endorsements.  But I see one other tremendous benefit.  LinkedIn is a social media site.  Each time someone shares an endorsement you instantly know two things: 1) who they are and 2) that they stopped by your LinkedIn site.  To me it's another great indicator to see how well your social media marketing efforts are working.

Your People Make Your Brand (Smart Monday/People)

Hello, I’m Jim Glover, That Branding Guy, for Once a Day Marketing™.  Today is Smart Monday and I am highlighting another important component of the 7Ps of Marketing, the people who represent your brand.

As your brand ambassadors, every person in your organization is a reflection of your brand.  It's critical that your team members understand this important point.  Hiring the best people is key.  Continuous customer service training will also create a company culture where employees understand how to represent the brand in a positive manner.

Relationship marketing is another way to build a brand through your employees.  Referred to as people 2 people marketing or P2P, the personal interactions by you and your team members with individual customers, vendors and partners create meaningful conversations and lasting impressions that elevate the strength and stature of your brand.

Customer Smiles Build Brand Loyalty (Recon Thursday/People)

Hello, I’m Jim Glover, That Branding Guy, for Once a Day Marketing™.  Today is Recon Thursday where I often share ideas to inspire your branding efforts.

When was the last time you made your customers smile by doing something unexpected for them?  Has it been a while?  You can really strengthen customer loyalty through a simple action.

Perhaps you give customers a thank you note or a token of appreciation for their business.  Maybe you let them know you made a contribution to a charity on their behalf.  What if you rewarded them with a fresh-baked chocolate chip cookie for stopping by your business?

The goal is to put smiles on their faces through your action.  You know your customers better than anyone; what you do to surprise them is up to you.  The gesture doesn't have to be big or expensive as long as you create favorable impressions in their minds.  Each unexpected smile builds brand loyalty.

Networking Generates Business Opportunities (Action Wednesday/People)

Hello, I’m Jim Glover, That Branding Guy, for Once a Day Marketing™.  Today is Action Wednesday and I want you to promise to do one very important thing this year: network.

There are many ways to build your personal brand, in my opinion nothing works as well as networking.  Meeting someone face-to-face is essential in relationship building which is the foundation for virtually all your future business opportunities.

I do a lot of branding and strategic work with communities.  Last week I attended a networking event featuring chambers of commerce, municipalities and economic development groups from all over the state of New Mexico.  In just a few hours I was able to meet many new people, discuss the needs of their communities, and exchange business cards.  I now am following up on several potential projects.

For Action Wednesday commit to networking more this year.  I know it will provide a great return on the time you invest.
