Branding Author Robert Wilder's New Novel Nickel (Strategy)

Listen to our featured Ask Those Branding Guys radio show podcast: Novelist Robert Wilder

Hello, I’m Jim Glover, That Branding Guy, for Once a Day Marketing™. On our radio show Ask Those Branding Guys, we discussed branding and marketing of a Santa Fe novelist.

Joining us on the show was Robert Wilder – author of the new book "Nickel." This is Robert’s third book and first novel which is about a teenager navigating the challenges of life. "Nickel" is positioned as a Young Adult (YA) book and has a cross over audience of parents and other adults.

Robert shared that today publishers expect authors to be an integral part of marketing their books. This includes promoting the work and developing an audience as well as writing their own copy and providing content for blogs being published in advance of events.

Robert felt that the cover of the book was a key element to generate interest and prompt consumers to buy. He had input into the creative process to design the image for the book cover. Working with artists that read the story, a contemporary image was created that reflects what is going on in the book.

To market "Nickel," Robert has created a mailing list to distribute information and also ask his audience to participate by sharing the book’s milestones. Glover suggested one way to keep the book top of mind may be to have the community of readers share stories about their own high school days.

Facebook is the social media site Robert favors and he occasionally will pay to boost posts for events or news such as his recent book signing tour in Texas. He has a website and uses Twitter as well.

Robert’s greatest branding challenge is determining at what point his audience is over saturated, especially when the paperback version of "Nickel" comes out. He is gearing up to find new ways to share new with his followers.

Enjoy the show.
